Running till December 4, 2025, the event beautifully blends faith, trade, and festivity, drawing lakhs of visitors, livestock traders, photographers, and culture lovers from across India and abroad.

As the sun rises over the Ganga–Gandak confluence, the sacred chants, rhythmic drums, and the sight of colorful stalls bring Sonepur to life — reminding visitors why this fair is a living symbol of India’s rural soul.

Sonpur Mela History and Significance

The Sonepur Mela, also known as the Harihar Kshetra Mela, is believed to date back to the Mauryan period, when Emperor Chandragupta Maurya purchased elephants and horses from here for his army.

According to legends, the fair celebrates the divine victory of Lord Vishnu (Hari) over a demon in the form of a crocodile — saving his devotee elephant Gajendra at this very spot.

Over centuries, the fair evolved into a grand event where faith meets festivity, symbolizing Bihar’s deep-rooted spiritual and trading traditions.
