Arunachal Pradesh is preparing to welcome the New Year in a historic way. The inaugural edition of this festival will run from 29 December 2025 to 2 January 2026, designed as a five-day New Year celebration that blends culture, adventure and responsible tourism. The First Sunrise Festival is a new state-supported tourism initiative created around a very simple but powerful idea: Key points: Location: Dong village, Dong Valley, near Walong in Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh Duration: 29 December 2025 – 2 January 2026 Theme: Nature, culture, adventure and eco-friendly New Year celebrations Core objective: Promote border tourism, support local communities and showcase the unique identity of Arunachal Pradesh Officials describe it as a community-led, experience-driven festival that brings together artists, explorers, scholars and travellers from India and abroad to witness the first sunrise of the year. Dong is not just another hill village. It has a special geographical position: It lies close to the India–China–Myanmar tri-junction, at the far eastern edge of Arunachal Pradesh. Because of its longitude and elevation, Dong is considered the first place in India to witness sunrise, often around 4–4:30 am in winter. The village is home to the Meyor (Miju Mishmi) community, a small indigenous tribe known for their close bond with nature and rich traditions. The government has already highlighted Dong as a key part of its new tourism push, focusing on eco-tourism, adventure and unique experiences like “India’s first sunrise”. Start date: 29 December 2025 End date: 2 January 2026 Special moment: Sunrise on 1 January 2026 – the first official sunrise of the New Year in India, observed from Dong plateau. According to official and tourism sources, visitors can expect a mix of cultural, adventure and learning-based activities: Sunrise Ceremonies Guided walks or treks to the sunrise viewpoint Traditional welcome rituals as the first light appears Collective New Year sunrise pledge encouraging sustainable travel and peace Cultural Performances Folk dances and songs from the Meyor and other Arunachali communities Storytelling sessions about local legends, border history and the role of the Lohit Valley Traditional games and indigenous sports demonstrations Adventure & Nature Experiences Trekking and sunrise trails in and around Dong Valley Nature walks, birdwatching and river-side activities in the Lohit Valley Eco-camping with minimal-impact guidelines (“No trash, no trace” style approach) Local Art, Craft and Food Stalls run by local artisans with bamboo craft, woven textiles and handmade souvenirs Regional dishes prepared by village communities, showcasing Arunachal’s local cuisine Photography expeditions and plein-air (open-air) painting corners for artists and creators Workshops and Learning Spaces Sessions on sustainable mountain tourism Folk art, handicraft and traditional music workshops Talks by researchers, defence experts and historians on the strategic and cultural importance of this border region The First Sunrise Festival has been cleared and supported at the state level as a flagship event to promote border and highland tourism in Anjaw district. Tourism visibility: Puts Dong and the Lohit–Anjaw belt on the national and international tourism map. Local livelihoods: Home stays, guides, porters, artisans and local food vendors are likely to see increased income. Infrastructure push: Roads, communication and safety infrastructure are being strengthened to support the festival and future tourism. Positioning Arunachal: Reinforces the state’s brand as a nature-, culture- and adventure-focused destination, especially for New Year travel. Dong is remote, and reaching it is part of the experience. Nearest major points (usually via Assam): By Air Nearest airports (operational options) include Dibrugarh in Assam. From Dibrugarh, travellers typically continue by road towards Tezu/Walong and then to Dong. By Train The closest major railhead is New Tinsukia Junction in Assam. From there, travellers continue by road towards Tezu and onwards to Anjaw district. By Road Tezu and Walong are connected by mountain roads; further travel to the Dong trekking base is done via local vehicles. Dong’s main sunrise point itself is reached by a short but steep trek from the nearest motorable spot. Because of winter conditions and hilly terrain, travellers are advised to book with authorised tour operators or registered guides and keep adequate buffer time for weather-related delays. To support the eco-vision of the First Sunrise Festival, visitors are encouraged to: Carry reusable water bottles, cutlery and cloth bags Avoid single-use plastic and littering in any form Respect local customs, dress modestly and ask before photographing people Stick to marked trails and follow the instructions of local guides Book homestays or camps that follow basic waste management and sanitation norms This approach not only protects the fragile Himalayan environment but also ensures the festival remains sustainable for future years.
