Short Introduction to Chandrashila

Chandrashila means “Moon Rock” or “Rock of the Moon.” Located at an altitude of 3,680 meters, it is a summit above Chopta and Tungnath in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The trek is known for its accessible terrain, divine aura, and panoramic Himalayan views including Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, Trishul and Gangotri ranges.

Chandrashila is popular among:

  • Beginners
  • Solo trekkers
  • Winter trekkers
  • Photographers
  • Families seeking a moderate Himalayan trek

Chandrashila History

Chandrashila is not just a trek; it’s a blend of spirituality, mythology, and Himalayan culture. Chandrashila has long been associated with Himalayan pilgrimage, as the summit lies just above Tungnath, one of the Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Over time, hikers added it to their route because the short climb beyond the temple gives one of the widest skyline views in this part of Uttarakhand.

Chandrashila Mythology

Several legends surround Chandrashila:

Lord Rama’s Meditation

It is believed that Lord Rama arrived at Chandrashila to meditate after defeating Ravana. The peaceful summit still carries this spiritual energy.

Moon God Chandra’s Penance

According to a popular belief, Chandra—the Moon God—performed penance here, which is why this place is called Chandra-Shila, meaning Rock of the Moon.

Shiva's Presence

Many local stories say Lord Shiva spent time at this summit, and therefore the region around Tungnath and Chandrashila is blessed with divine presence.

The overall best time to visit Chandrashila is from April to June and September to November, when skies are usually clear and trails are easier to walk.

  • Spring (April–June) is ideal if you want pleasant weather, moderate Chandrashila temperature and blooming rhododendron forests on the Chopta–Tungnath route.
  • Autumn (September–November) offers the sharpest mountain views, with crisp air and golden forests, making it the top season for Chandrashila trek photography.
  • Monsoon (July–August) is generally not recommended as the best time to visit Chandrashila because of heavy rain, slippery stone paths and frequent landslides on mountain roads
  • Early winter (late November–early December) is good if you want a mix of clear views and light snow patches, but you must carry proper winter gear for the cold.
  • Peak winter (late December–February) is the best time to visit Chandrashila for heavy snow and a full winter trek experience, but trails can be tougher and sometimes blocked.
  • Beginners who want an easy to moderate Chandrashila trek should prefer the main spring and autumn windows, when daylight is longer and the route is well‑defined
  • If your main goal is Chandrashila snowfall, target dates from late December to February, and always check local weather updates a few days before your trip.

Whenever you plan your visit, keep a buffer day in the itinerary so you can handle unexpected rain, snow or roadblocks that are common in Himalayan regions.

Chandrashila Snowfall Time

  • Snowfall at Chandrashila begins around late November and lasts until March.
  • More and heavier snow comes from late December to February.
